Kroz ovaj i druge slične projekte Fondacija BH Inicijative Žena (BHWI) i UNHCR ostat će posvećeni unapređenju kvalitete obrazovanja i podrške djeci izbjeglicama.
Summer School Brightens the Holidays for Children from Refugee and Asylum Seeker Families
The joy, excitement, and curiosity that 14-year-old Karwin* brings each time he attends the Summer School in Sarajevo, organized by Save the Children with support from partners from government and non-government sectors, including UNHCR and BHWI, continually delights the teaching staff and team of mediators involved in this project.
Karwin* is originally from Iraq, residing in the Stari Grad municipality of Sarajevo. Given that the boy’s mother is employed, the cultural mediator for the Arabic language, Dženan, and educator Danira from the Bosnia and Herzegovina Women’s Initiative (BHWI), supported by UNHCR, have taken on the role of his guardians, ensuring that Karwin* doesn’t miss a single day of this special school and the activities arranged within its framework.
Through pedagogical mentoring, the BHWI team offers essential support to young students coming from refugee families or families seeking asylum, facilitating their adaptation to the new environment. To guarantee safety and mitigate distance, the team has secured bus tickets for Karwin* and other participants, ensuring they can safely attend the classes daily.
“Attending the Summer School has made this holiday beautiful and interesting. I’ve made new friends, learned a lot about Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as etiquette, ecology, and various professions. I visited interesting places where I hadn’t been before, and I am grateful for this opportunity,” shared Karwin*.
“We are happy that our children have the opportunity to learn the Bosnian language in this way and to socialize with their peers,” agreed the parents.
All children on Earth have the right to a happy childhood filled with play, friendship, and education. War, persecution, violence, human rights violations, and the traumas induced by these experiences have marked the early years of many students at the Summer School. Heading to school with a backpack featuring a favorite cartoon character, the smell of new textbooks, and the smiling face of a teacher, all universal symbols of a happy childhood, are now their reality. Through this and other similar initiatives, the Bosnia and Herzegovina Women’s Initiative (BHWI) and UNHCR remain dedicated to enhancing the quality of education and support for refugee children.
