New Language, New Perspectives: Transforming Lives Through Education

Language is the key that unlocks the doors to new worlds, new opportunities, and new beginnings. With the support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Bosnia and Herzegovina Women’s Initiative Foundation (BHWI) is implementing a project to organize and maintain a certified local language course, paving the way for integration and a brighter future for 76 asylum seekers, persons under international protection, individuals with approved temporary residence, and their families. This story is about how linguistic barriers were overcome, opening new horizons for these individuals, and building bridges of understanding and unity at the heart of Bosnian society.

From Sarajevo and East Sarajevo, from Tešanj to Kneževo, Žepče, Brčko, and the Ušivak Temporary Reception Center, language courses were extended providing knowledge and skills essential for everyday life and work. For those outside the Sarajevo Canton, language courses were available online, ensuring access to education regardless of location.

A special moment in this journey was December 19, 2023, when a ceremonial diploma presentation was held for 29 participants who successfully completed the third cycle of instruction. “Better understanding of the Bosnian language helps me to communicate more freely with my employer, engage in discussions on any topic with customers, and even share jokes,” said one of the participants on this occasion. “Overcoming the language barrier simplifies communication among people and expands vocabulary. I thank the teachers of the Poliglot foreign language school, the BHWI Foundation, and UNHCR for the opportunity to improve my language skills.”

Concurrently with the certified course, informal local language teaching was organized to provide psychosocial support using a methodology tailored to individual needs of certain beneficiaries. This approach further strengthened ties between students and the community, demonstrating that language is not just a communication tool but also a means of building mutual understanding and respect.

Learning a language opens many doors – from education and employment to a better understanding of culture and environment. With this project, the BHWI Foundation and UNHCR have not only imparted knowledge but have initiated a transformation in the lives of those most in need. Through every learned word, every new conversation started, this program has become a significant step in building bridges of understanding and opening paths to a better future.
